Hey everyone, in this week’s blog I will be taking you through 'Big Data presents several potential ethical and social challenges’. The challenges I will mention in the blog include data ownership issues, privacy, and consent.
Challenges
that Big Data presents:
1) Data Ownership Issues
Big Data can be difficult to manage because of the amount of volume of information that is collected. Due to the large amounts of diverse and complex data, it can make it difficult to identify, track, and control who owns what data, and how it is used. With companies looking for this information to be processed at high speeds, the data ownership challenge becomes more and more prevalent for a company.
2) Privacy
This is one of the biggest challenges with big data, as so much information is being collected on people, that privacy rights may have been crossed in the process. Traditional privacy processes cannot protect sensitive data, and this has led to a big increase in cybercrime and data leaks. For a customer, the last thing they want is their sensitive data to be hacked or leaked which poses a social and ethical challenge.
3) Consent
Consent is a big challenge for Big Data, you must inform the person of the use of their data and what they will be doing with it. There can also be informed consent which proves a social and ethical challenge as customers have not been informed of where their data is used and if the data has been transferred to other companies. In my opinion, this can be scary though as the sensitive data that has been collected could be used for anything and you are not aware of it.
To conclude, Big data has many uses and has
transformed the way businesses operate which in turn has benefited the public but
as listed above there are also challenges that Big Data faces and it's important
for consumers to be fully aware of how this can affect them. In class we went into further detail, can anybody from our class this week name anymore challenges?
Big Data definitely has some concerns, good insight!
